Giovanni Minardi, Antonelli’s former manager, claims that he is owed compensation for the work, investment and career opportunities he provided during the driver’s early years.
Minardi filed the civil case in 2025 before the Court of Bologna in Italy. The existence of the dispute became widely reported in July 2026. Minardi’s lawyer says the proceeding has already involved several hearings and has reached an advanced stage. No final judgment has been announced.
The case contains disputed contractual allegations. Antonelli and his family have not been found liable, and the amount, if any, legally owed to Minardi will be determined by the court.
Who Is Giovanni Minardi?
Giovanni Minardi is the son of Giancarlo Minardi, who founded the Minardi Formula One team. The team competed in Formula One from 1985 until 2005 before being sold and later becoming Toro Rosso.
Giovanni reportedly began representing Antonelli after recognising his talent during his early karting years. Minardi’s lawyer says he followed Antonelli from around the age of eight and helped introduce him to important figures in professional motorsport.
Minardi allegedly arranged an early opportunity for Antonelli to be considered by Ferrari. When that path did not progress, he later helped connect the young driver with Mercedes. Antonelli joined the Mercedes Junior Programme in April 2019 at the age of 12.
Why Did Minardi Sue Kimi Antonelli?
The dispute centres on a management or representation agreement involving Minardi, Antonelli and Antonelli’s parents. Because Antonelli was a minor when the agreement was made, his parents are also involved in the litigation.
Minardi claims that compensation provided for under the representation agreement was never fully paid. He is also reportedly seeking damages connected with the ending of the management relationship.
Italian reports indicate that the relationship was terminated around the end of 2018 as Antonelli moved towards the Mercedes junior system. Minardi argues that he had already spent years developing Antonelli’s career and should receive the contractual recognition allegedly promised for that work.
Antonelli’s position has been described in Italian reporting as a belief that he and his family acted lawfully. The full defence arguments and contractual documents have not been made publicly available.
How Much Money Is Minardi Seeking?
The precise amount requested in the lawsuit has not been officially confirmed.
Some reports have described the case as involving several million euros. However, no publicly available judgment, claim document or statement from Minardi’s lawyer has established an exact figure. The amount should therefore not be presented as a verified multimillion-euro award.
Any possible compensation could depend on the wording of the original management agreement, the circumstances in which it ended and whether Minardi was entitled to a percentage of Antonelli’s later earnings or other payments.
The court may also need to decide whether the contract remained enforceable after Antonelli entered the Mercedes development programme and whether the conditions for terminating the relationship had been satisfied.
Settlement Discussions Were Unsuccessful
Minardi’s lawyer, Mattia Grassani, said the parties held several meetings before the dispute proceeded through the civil court. These discussions were intended to find a private and friendly settlement.
According to Grassani, offers were made but were considered unacceptable by Minardi. He described litigation as the remaining option after the parties failed to find common ground.
Grassani has said the case is not solely about money. He argues that it also concerns recognition for Minardi’s years of work, sacrifice and investment in a driver who was unknown when their professional relationship began.
Those statements represent Minardi’s position. They do not establish that Antonelli breached the agreement or owes the compensation being requested.
Could Mercedes Officials Give Evidence?
Reports have suggested that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff and driver-development director Gwen Lagrue could potentially be asked to provide evidence.
Their testimony could help explain when Mercedes became involved with Antonelli, what conditions applied to his junior programme and whether changes in professional management affected the earlier agreement with Minardi.
However, their appearance has been reported only as a possibility. There is no confirmed public record showing that either Wolff or Lagrue has testified or has been formally ordered to appear.
Mercedes officially states that Antonelli joined its Junior Programme in April 2019. He later entered Formula One with the team in 2025 and became one of the sport’s leading drivers. As of Aug 05, 2026, he was first in the Formula One drivers’ standings with 219 points.
Current Status of the Lawsuit
