The latest arrests are separate from the underlying death investigation. Federal authorities have arrested or charged three people from outside Mississippi over alleged threats directed at a judge, a witness and government offices connected to the high-profile case.
At the same time, Mississippi’s state autopsy has been completed but its findings have not been publicly released. Officials say the death investigation will ultimately be presented to a grand jury.
Who Was Nolan Wells?
Nolan Xavier Wells was an 18-year-old student-athlete from Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He traveled by boat with friends to Horn Island, an uninhabited barrier island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, on July 4, 2026.
Wells did not return to the mainland with the group. His body was found two days later, on July 6, near Horn Island.
The circumstances surrounding his death quickly drew national attention. Wells’ family has repeatedly asked for transparency and a thorough investigation, while civil rights attorney Ben Crump has joined the family’s legal team.
Have There Been Any Arrests in Nolan Wells’ Death?
No arrest has been announced for causing Nolan Wells’ death.
Authorities have not publicly identified a suspect or charged anyone with homicide or another offense directly connected to his death. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding what happened to Wells.
This distinction is important because recent headlines about “arrests in the Nolan Wells case” refer to people accused of making threats during the investigation, not people accused of killing Wells.
Three People Charged Over Alleged Threats

Edward James Porter of Illinois was accused of making threats against a witness and the witness’s family. Federal allegations say he also made threats involving law enforcement officers.
Michelle Francine Edwards of Ohio was accused of making repeated threatening calls and bomb threats involving government offices in Mississippi.
Joseph Alfredo Vasquez Dumarce of California was accused of sending threatening messages to Jackson County Chancery Judge Ashlee Cole. Cole is the mother of one of the young men who was with Wells on the July 4 trip to Horn Island.
The three cases involve federal allegations of transmitting threatening communications. Authorities have emphasized that these defendants are not accused of involvement in Wells’ death.
Why Are Officials Warning About Social Media Claims?
The Wells case has generated a large amount of speculation online, including claims about toxicology results, witnesses and people who were with Wells shortly before his death.
Mississippi Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell recently warned that a document circulating online and presented as Wells’ toxicology report is fraudulent.
Officials have urged the public not to treat social-media documents or allegations as verified evidence. The actual state autopsy findings have not been publicly released, making unofficial claims about toxicology or cause of death especially unreliable.
What Does the State Autopsy Show?
The Mississippi State Medical Examiner completed the official autopsy report in late July 2026, but the results remain confidential and have not been released publicly.
That means there is still no official public determination explaining Wells’ cause and manner of death.
Wells’ family also arranged an independent autopsy. Preliminary findings from that examination described the cause and manner of death as undetermined pending further investigation. No. As of August 9, 2026, none of the friends or other people reported to have been with Wells on Horn Island has been publicly charged in connection with his death.
Authorities also have not publicly identified any of them as a criminal defendant in the death investigation.
